Summer Camp Packing list (free download)

An illustrated notebook page with 7 items on it for a summer camp packing list

Summer camps on Martha’s Vineyard come in all shapes and sizes. Kids may be riding horses, swimming, playing tennis, making sculptures, painting pictures or even working on a farm! Almost all camps are outdoors so come prepared for the hot sun of July and August

Each camp will have its own requirements but here are a few essentials you might need to pack. Download this summer camp packing list

  • Lightweight Clothing: Think breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking materials. Pack enough t-shirts, shorts, and a couple of long-sleeve shirts for cooler mornings or protection from the sun.
  • Swimwear and towel: For those splashy, water-based activities, include a swimsuit, towel and perhaps a rash guard for extra sun protection. These microfiber towels are very light, dry quickly and wrap up small. Plus, they double as a beach or picnic blanket.
  • Comfortable Footwear: Closed-toe shoes are a must for activities and nature walks, along with water shoes for aquatic adventures. I love these Keen sandals we got last summer – they are closed-toe to protect little feet, can be worn in the water and are lightweight with great airflow.
  • Sun Protection: A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a reliable, child-friendly sunscreen will guard against the sun’s rays. This once-a-day sunscreen is my absolute favorite and gives me peace of mind that my children’s skin is still protected even after hours in the sun.
  • Tick and Insect Repellent: With ticks prevalent on the Vineyard, insect repellent is crucial. Consider clothing treated with permethrin for added protection. I use this permethrin spray on my kids shoes and clothes. It lasts for 6 weeks (even after washing!) and I love that it doesn’t smell or stain.
  • Water Bottle and lunchbox: A refillable water bottle will keep them hydrated throughout the hot, sunny days. Fill it with ice and water in the morning to keep the water cool for longer. I use these Bentgo Chill lunchboxes with a built-in ice pack so food stays cool even if they are out and about
  • Backpack: A sturdy, lightweight backpack is essential for carrying their daily gear and treasures collected along the way.
